What is a cold sore?
Cold sores are blisters which can appear on any part of the face but particularly on the lips.1
They’re a common condition and tend to clear up on their own within a few days after the blister has burst and scabbed over.2
You can usually tell when one is about to appear by the tingling, burning or itching feeling that signals it’s on its way!
Where do cold sores come from?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and once you get the virus it stays in your body, which means you might find they reappear occasionally.1 They can be caused by illness, sunshine, menstruation2 or stress1.
They are contagious and passed on by skin-to-skin contact. You can’t catch a cold sore from things like cutlery towels, shared cups or lipstick – unless infected fluid is present.1
What are cold sore symptoms?
Tingling and itching
People often feel these sensations a couple of days before one or more painful blisters appear.1
Blisters
Blisters can appear anywhere on the face, but more commonly on the lips. They’re usually small and filled with fluid.1
Oozing and crusting

How can you treat a cold sore?
Keep your hands clean
Try not to touch your cold sore, only to apply treatment1 and then wash your hands with soap and water.2
Avoid skin contact with others
Do not kiss anyone if you have a cold sore.2
Avoid sharing items
Even though the virus is spread through skin-to-skin contact, it’s best not to risk passing on the infection by sharing household items.1
