About Cold Sores

Cold sores are small blisters that develop on the lips or around the mouth. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Cold sores are common and very infectious. If you’ve ever had one, you’ll know they can be painful, unsightly and difficult to hide.

When you’re getting a cold sore, the first thing you might feel is a tingling or itching around your mouth. Soon after, a number of fluid-filled blisters will appear. The blisters break and ooze, then crust over into a scab. They’ll heal gradually after about 7 to 10 days and won’t leave scars. But they’ll be infectious until they’re completely gone.

Once you’ve had a cold sore, they can come back again and again. This is because the virus that causes them, the herpes simplex virus (HSV) or cold sore virus, doesn’t go away, but don’t worry, it remains dormant most of the time.

HSV is often caught in childhood by close contact with someone who has the virus. Later flare-ups of HSV appear as cold sores. Most people get cold sores a few times a year but they can be triggered more often, especially if you are ill or run down.
